Windows Update – Not Updating on Windows 7

I’m not sure if it’s just me, but as of late I’ve had nothing but issues with Windows update not updating on Windows 7.

This seems to be a bigger problem on new installs of Windows 7, but I’ve just left it running and eventually the updates have worked. In some cases though, it has taken over 24hrs for Windows Update to actually find them, let alone install them.

Since I’ve now fallen out with Windows 10, and resorted back to 7 (I’m sure I’ll be back soon), I decided I was going to work it out.

Here’s what to do:

First of all, you need to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter. This will most likely find an issue or two and “fix them”.

At this time DON’T launch Windows Update. If you do, nothing bad will actually happen, you’ll just need to run the troubleshooter again.

Now, manually update the Windows Update Agent. This is the update that usually runs on a new install before Windows Update will find the rest of the OS updates.

After that, you’re good to go. It’s probably a good idea to restart your computer beforehand, however you should now be able to update your computer.
